Founding And Purpose

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.  The Four Pillars identified as the founding principles of the Legion are: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.

Mission And Objectives

The mission of the American Legion is to support our fellow Service Members and Veterans, provide mentoring and help to youth programs, and assist our local community.  Our Post has various programs to meet our objectives.

We actively support the Joseph P Dwyer Veteran Peer Support project and are available to help any Veteran with assistance.  The Post is also active with the Missing In America Project which identifies and provides for the interment of Abandoned Veterans.  We provide information, assistance, and references for all Veterans and Active Duty Service Members.

We actively support the Boys State project which allows juniors in High School to attend Boys State where they learn about government and civic responsibility.  Boys State is a valuable and highly recognized program.  We also give talks with the local schools about our experiences in the Military and what it means to be a Veteran.  At the end of the school year, we work with the schools to provide Citizenship awards to deserving students.

We also work with the community in many ways.  We are involved with all the parades in Patchogue.  We provide a Color Guard for events in the local community and provide Flag Etiquette classes.  We have conducted Flag Day Ceremonies and Veterans Day Ceremonies at local housing areas on request.  We also work with the Village of Patchogue and act as an Emergency Center during times of need.  Our Post is also a member of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce.
